LD Palace History Collection

Towards the end of the seventeenth century the aristocratic Lesic family, local landowners prominent in trade and commerce in Korcula, began to acquire a number of contiguous properties in the town with a view to creating for themselves a prestigious urban residence. During that period up until now, there are some interesting items from everyday life found in the LD Palace.

One of the most significant pieces found in the Palace is the icon ‘Madonna and Child’. It was made by an unknown artist of the Cretan-Venetian school from the 16th to 17th century. It is painted by tempera on rectangular shaped wood in dimensions 38.2 x 28.2 x 2 cm and displays similarity to the type of icon known as Madre della Consolazione. Madonna is dressed in dark red maforion with a golden buckle on the chest decorated with a star. Jesus is dressed in bright red himation decorated with golden lines in shape of flowers and stars. On the scroll that Jesus holds in his hand is a text which is a quotation of gospel Luke 4, 18: The Spirit of the Lord is on me because I was anointed.
